Jan
was an outstanding aerobatic pilot. She flew an aggressive and
energetic program, including multiple snap rolls, lomcevaks,
torque rolls and knife edge spins. In addition to performing,
Jan won many aerobatic competitive titles, including the 1992 US
National Sportsman Champion, International Aerobatic Club
Sportsman Champion, Illinois State Sportsman Champion, and the
1992 L. Paul Soucy Award.
Jan died May 9, 1995 from injuries
sustained in an aircraft accident. Jan was not only a respected
aerobatic pilot, she was loved for her sparkling, energetic
personality, her passion for flying, and her willingness to
share her knowledge with others.
The Jan Jones Memorial Scholarship has been made possible
through an endowment from Jan's parents, William and Mary Jones
and other generous donors. The scholarship provides a grant to
be applied towards aerobatic training. The recipient must be a
female, hold a private pilot's license, and write a short essay
on why she wants to learn aerobatics. The recipient is selected
by a panel of female aerobatic pilots, and announced at the
International Council of Air Shows Annual Convention, held every
December.
Qualifications: The
recipient must be a female holding a private pilot
certificate, and must use the scholarship for aerobatic
flight training.
Scholarship Amount: $2,000.
